Impressive monograph on the Belgian connection of sculptor Ossip Zadkine

Ossip Zadkine (1888–1967) is regarded as one of the greatest innovators in modern sculpture. His varied work, ranging from monumental figures to gouaches, watercolours and drawings, was inspired by classical, naturalistic sculpture, avant-garde art and the Slavic tradition.

He enjoyed a special bond with Belgium, and with Antwerp in particular. His Belgian network of gallery owners, critics, collectors and Flemish artists helped launch his international career. These unique professional and friendly ties, which the artist would cherish throughout his life and which drew him to Antwerp many times, are the subject of this publication. It also highlights the life and work of the artist Valentine Prax, Zadkine’s wife, who was immensely important to the sculptor.

This publication accompanies the exhibition Ossip Zadkine and Belgium from 31 October 2026 to 18 April 2027 at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA). This exhibition is the result of an exceptional collaboration with Paris Musées / Musée Zadkine.
