Scientific publication on textiles from the Nile Valley

This book compiles 19 articles, primarily focused on early silk textiles from Egypt and the Mediterranean region. Silk was highly valued for the sheen and fineness of its fibers. From Roman times onward, it was imported from China, but local silk production also began. Silk is associated with the development of complex weaves and served as a status symbol in society. The spread and use of silk, as well as the rise of local sericulture in the first millennium AD, have not yet been fully studied. In this book, renowned experts delve deeper into early silk finds from excavations, the use of silk for clothing, and the weaving techniques of silk textiles.

This publication is based on the findings of the 13th International Scientific Congress on Textiles from the Nile Valley, held from 17 to 19 November 2023 in Antwerp.

Wetenschappelijke publicatie over textiel uit de Nijlvallei

Dit boek bundelt 19 artikelen, voornamelijk over vroege zijden textielsoorten uit Egypte en het Middellandse Zeegebied. Zijde werd zeer gewaardeerd vanwege de glans en fijnheid van de vezels. Vanaf de Romeinse tijd werd het geïmporteerd uit China, maar ook de lokale zijdeteelt kwam op gang. Zijde wordt geassocieerd met de ontwikkeling van complexe weefsels. Het is een statussymbool in de maatschappij. De verspreiding en het gebruik van zijde en de opkomst van een lokale zijdeteelt in het eerste millennium na Christus zijn nog niet volledig onderzocht. In dit boek gaan gerenommeerde experts dieper in op vroege zijdevondsten bij opgravingen, het gebruik van zijde voor kleding en de weeftechnieken van zijden textiel.

Deze publicatie is gebaseerd op de bevindingen van het dertiende internationale wetenschappelijke congres van Textiles from the Nile Valley, dat plaatsvond van 17 tot 19 november 2023 in Antwerpen.
