Het was een schok toen Erwin Olaf Springveld (1959-2023) onverwacht overleed terwijl hij herstelde van een longtransplantatie. In de jaren tachtig en negentig werd hij bekend door zijn extravagante, soms seksueel expliciete foto’s. Hij liet zich inspireren door Robert Mapplethorpe, Hans van Manen en Paul Blanca en vond zijn muzen in het Amsterdamse uitgaansleven.

Later ontwikkelde hij zich van rebelse avantgardist tot gevierde kunstenaar. Honderdduizenden bezochten zijn exposities, van Den Haag tot Shanghai. Daarbij bleef hij zichzelf trouw als schepper van een eigen universum, onvermoeibaar strijdend voor de rechten van de queer gemeenschap.
