Tekst achterflap
This book introduces students to the theory and practice of
translation. It also examines issues that are often debated such
as the concept of meaning, translation as an art or science, fallacies
of translation, and translation rules and ethics. Chapters in
this book can be used to teach any course introducing students
to the field of translation. One of the distinguishing features is
that there is a set of questions found at the end of each chapter
that tests the student’s knowledge of the information covered. In
addition, some relevant texts are provided for students to translate
into the target language, something that is hardly ever found
in textbooks on translation. In addition, the book introduces legal
and scientific translation and offers real life examples that have
been carefully selected for classroom practice.
Said M. Shiyab is a Professor of Linguistics and Translation Studies,
MCLS Graduate Studies Director and Director of the Arabic
MA Translation Program at Kent State University. Prior to joining
Kent State University, he was teaching graduate and undergraduate
translation courses at the University of Geneva, Switzerland.
He also taught at various international institutions such as University
of Southern Indiana (USA), King Saud University (SA), Yarmouk
University, (Jordan), and UAE University (UAE). Professor
Shiyab was the Founder and Chair of the Department of Translation
Studies and the Acting Chair of the French Language Program
at the UAE University. He is a member of the International
Journal of Asian Philosophical Association (IJAPA), a member of
Babel’s editorial boards and the International Journal of Translation
Studies in the New Millennium, and a member and a fellow
in the Chartered Institute of Linguists, London, (UK). He is also
a Language Consultant and Translation Test Assessor for Xerox
Global Knowledge and Language Services (Translation), UK, and a
member of the Higher Council for Translation, Arab League.
